Why do long interview processes fail

Why do long interview processes fail 5 Flares 5 Flares Want to win an absolutely FREE Professional Resume Edit complete by Vertical Media Solutions (www.vmsolu.com)?  Read contest details at the bottom! All participants win! Top talent moves fast, so why do companies insist on interview/hiring processes that take forever?  Most of us have been part of an incredibly awful interview process before, or at least know someone that has.  Its never fun, and I can ensure you its not a walk in the park for the organization either.  Recently, I was researching company interview strategies and came across an example of a terribly long process that Im sure results in frustrated candidates and lost talent for the organization.  Here are the painful  7  steps in their process: Resume submittal/Quick initial phone Screen if resume meets basic qualifications Candidate takes at least 1 skill assessment test Second phone screen lasting one hour with their recruiter (an hour, really?) Face-to-face interview with hiring manager lasting 2 hours (finally) Candidate takes personality assessment test (find something sharp, and stab me, please) Second face-to-face interview with hiring manager and team members (why not meet the team the first time around?) Offer presented.   Contingent on successful background and reference check (if the candidate is still around) Why do long interview processes like this fail? Processes like the one above drive candidates absolutely bonkers.   People (especially top talent) arent willing to wait forever and will jump on the first opportunity that comes their way.  A process like the one above would take at least 3-4 weeks to schedule.  Not only does the candidate need to make room for each terrible step, but the recruiter, hiring manager, and team members of the organization need to plan time.  The elongated process greatly increases the risk of losing talent to competitors and other companies. What would I change? There is much I would change about the above process to make it run smoother for the organization and candidate.  Here is the process that I would implement: Resume Submittal/Phone Screen with recruiter (just one phone screen needed) Skill and Personality Assessments Complete by Candidate (if these tests are critical, get them out of the way first) Face-to-face interview with hiring manager and team members (panel interview possibly) Offer presented.  Contingent on successful background and reference check (done!) The process I outlined works, Ive implemented a process like that and received excellent feed back from candidates.  People do not like having to go back to an interview site or plan for 3, 4, or 5 separate screening sessions .  Many people that are already working want to spend their vacation time on the beach, not in your office.  Those that are unemployed hope the process moves quick and makes good use of their time.  Its simple, just treat candidates like customers and everyones happy. How to be ready for the interview -

How to be ready for the interview - Contrary to popular belief, the holiday season can be a great time to look for a job. Hiring continues right through the end of the year, so youll want to be ready for interviews. Since you will no doubt be busy and distracted by activities that may seem more important than your job search, this is a good time to get your interview preparedness kit ready. What do you need to have on hand so you can confidently interview for your targeted jobs at the drop of a hat? Your what to wear kit. Do you have your interview attire clean and ready to wear? If someone calls, you should be able to get dressed and go. If youre not ready, now is the time to get organized. Your marketing materials and pitch. Its your job to come in with a clear understanding of what the organization needs and to raise those points during your conversation with the hiring manager. Answers for questions you dont want to address. Were you fired? Be prepared to discuss it. Did you hate your last boss? Have a good answer if and when the topic comes up. Is there a skill the employer wants that you dont have? Plan what you will say when it surfaces. Smile, give an answer that helps him or her feel confident that youre not the type of person to blabber on about negative topics, and move on. Questions for your interviewer.   Your interviewer hopes youre smart and capable, so ask questions proving you have both of those qualities. Your follow-up plan. Another often overlooked aspect of the interview process: Most job seekers dont send a thank you note, nor do they follow up with their interviewers. Be sure you have the complete names, titles, and contact information for everyone you meet; it makes following up so much easier. Writing a Sloppily Sloppy But Ineffective Resume - Tips For Writing a Sloppily Sloppy But Ineffective Resume

Writing a Sloppily Sloppy But Ineffective Resume - Tips For Writing a Sloppily Sloppy But Ineffective ResumeWriting a streamlined resume is an absolute must in today's world of internet and technology. The internet has become a very powerful tool that many people use every day to locate employment. And, many people have no idea how to efficiently and effectively list their qualifications on this format. If you are a new person, looking for work, it is important to develop a resume that is concise, simple and professional. Some of the general categories to include in your resume is what type of work you do, how long you have been there, if you have any awards or degrees, your education, whether you live with or without roommates, and your age. You should list your job title first, followed by your previous employer's information and lastly your contact information. It is also very important to list your education and work experience to show your capabilities, then your educational back ground and lastly a career objective statement. Many job seekers opt to write a resume using only one page, in a file or folder. However, this is a mistake because it becomes very difficult to search through these various file formats or folders and read through them all at the same time. Therefore, you need to break it up into smaller, more manageable portions, and have the information come out in the order you want it to, without losing the organization of the resume. The first tip for writing a streamlined resume format is to use one or two paragraphs to make the entire section appear streamlined and informative. For example, if you are seeking employment as a manager, include all of the relevant information that relates to your role, position title, education, employment experience, and employment history, and then highlight the career objectives or other career goals you have. Most new people don't have as much information to provide about themselves as they would like. To improve the credibility of your resume and to show you are qualified for a position, you can include your qualifications in your job description and use these to give a clearer picture of your accomplishments. The great benefit of being able to write a resume by yourself is that you will have a better understanding of what the hiring managers are looking for in an applicant. They are looking for specific qualities that make an applicant a great fit for the position. One thing you can do to help you become more prepared when it comes to writing a streamlined resume is to be in constant contact with job seekers. Find out what they need, ask for help and share information you might know. This will not only save you time but it will make you an even more qualified applicant.

What I Wish I Had Known A Guide to Being a First Time Manager - Your Career Intel

What I Wish I Had Known A Guide to Being a First Time Manager - Your Career IntelWhen you walk into your office on the first day as manger, it can feel like an entirely new world. Nothing has changed but everything has.I welches 31 years old when I had my first management role. I had been in a senior role on a gruppe I knew well and suddenly I was tasked with managing a bunch of people I had never honigwein before. You know how they say wild animals are more afraid of you than you are of them? Well, on my first day, I was that wild animal. The team was nervous theydidntknow me and had no idea if I would fire people or start changing everything. But I was even more nervous because Ididntknow what I was doingIn retrospect, I look back and mostly remember the mistakes I made. I feel like I did everything wrong. But you dont have to fall into the same traps as I did.Heres what I wish I knew as a first time manager that I know nowGet to Know Your TeamThe first thing I now do when managin g a new team is get to know my people. A change in leadership is an uncomfortable time for everyone. Break through the awkwardness by learning who these people are partally and professionally. Ask about their roles, their successes and their lives. This lets them feel that you care about them as people and that you see each person as an important member of the team.Earn RespectYou gain immediate authority from your title but respect can only be earned by being a great leader. You can start on day 1 by walking in with confidence. Dont be arrogant but your team needs to see that you are a capable leader. Be prepared to speak to your own success but also to let them know that you are invested in their success. A manager who is not only successful but who cares is one who will be respected.Set the ToneThe example you set for your team trickles down and develops into a micro-culture within the company. Setting expectations is important for managers but its only meaningful if you are the personal embodiment of what you expect. That goes for everything from wardrobe and promptness to work style and ethics. If you are consistent, your team will follow suit.Take Time to AssessSome first time managers think that the way to assert authority is to come in guns blazing and start making changes. But just because things are differentdoesntmean theyre broken and unnecessary changes can be counterproductive. Put your own beliefs about how things should orshouldntwork aside and take the time to assess what is andisntworking before you make changes.Set BoundariesWhen managing a new team, you want to be friendly but not friends. This is a fine line and a tough one to walk. I aim to have my team members view me as a partner 75% of the time and a anfhrer 25% of the time. Warm relationships with your team create a collegial atmosphere, which is great for team morale and productivity. However, being too close to them makes tasks like giving reviews and assigning tasks very messy. As a manager you have to able to do your job without personal biases influencing your behavior and without any perceived or actual favoritism.Take OwnershipWhen mistakes get made, the buck stops with you as the manager. Never try to slough off the blame on your team. Own up to what has happened, take the steps to fix it, and then make the adjustments required to make sure it doesnt happen again. On the other hand, share credit with your team for successes. This helps you gain the trust and loyalty of your team and ensures you will consistently get their best work.Communicate OpenlyEvery employee has known the frustrations of being kept in the dark or being held to unrealistic expectations. Strong managers communicate transparently, honestly and regularly with their team about wertzuwachs and goals. I also think its important to communicate about your feelings. The most impactful managersIveworked with shared how they were feeling whether that was positive or negative and it made me fee l more connected with them. When youre real with your employees, theyll run through walls for you.Managing is a skill set in itself as evidenced by the thousands of fantastic books written on the topic. Before your first day, try picking up The First 90 Days Critical Success Strategies for New Leaders at All Levels by Michael Watkins and The Dream Manager by Matthew Kelly, which are my favorites. You can never go wrong by gathering the wisdom of experts. What is the best management adviceyouveever received? Let us know in the comments.
